Humboldt Museums 8th Annual Holiday Fine Art Show and Sale

Our Local Rock Painting group was asked to be a part of the Humboldt Museums 8th Annual Fine Art Show and Sale...it took place on Saturday, December 16th, 2017...This was my contribution...

Painted rocks...including mine...were available for suggested donations to raise money for our group so we can continue community events...have the supplies needed and do fun stuff for drawings.

I was busy before Christmas painting presents for my chilren and grandchildren...I also painted snowflake ornaments for people I work with...no painted rocks for presents this year...the ornaments were on wooden circles...Welcome wooden signs for my kids and watercolor paintings for my grandkids...
Maybe next year they will all get rocks...

Since I had to work I hid all my rocks around the school I work at...

She told me she was flying to get out of her car and grab it befoer someone else did...

For some reason I had a difficult time coming up with ideas for rainbows...next year I hopefully I'll be better prepared...Pinterest?

Kindness Box

We have two Kindness Boxes in town for when you are needing a little inspiration or encouragement... or know someone else who is...

You can find a rock with a message in one of our Kindness boxes...they tend to be empty a lot...so it keeps us busy trying to keep them supplied...

I'm glad others find these rocks and want the messages the have and the good feelings they give them...

The rocks I have done are mostly what I call smalls...an inch or two across...

Stained Glass Experiment

These painted rocks started out as an experiment...I was trying to replicate the look of stained glass but I don't think I captured that? I started by outlining my sketch with black two-dimensional paint...then filling in each portion with a couple of colors of acrylics and swirling them around with a toothpick...After the paint was dry I added the wording and sealed them...they were later hidden in town...

On this rock, I experimented with swirling different colors together all over the rock...when dry I added the black details...

For Pet's Sake

I was asked if I could paint a few rocks to donate to a For Pets Sake Inc. event. The rocks will sell for a donation.
For Pets Sake Inc. is the oldest independent Rescue in Washoe County, founded by Sara Petersen in 1984. They specialize in small dogs but do take larger dogs.

These rocks are the ones I painted for this event...

The bottom one of the Yorkie was hard to do...I painted and repainted several times until it was...okay, that's enough...I'm not going to get it as perfect as I'd like so I had to know when to quit...

Painting Mandalas on Rocks

I've wanted to try painting on rocks for awhile. I love the Mandala ones I've seen on Pinterest and elsewhere. Youtube is full of Tutorials on painting rocks, including painting Mandalas on Rocks. I wanted to find a Tutorial that I could easily follow. Youtube tutorials are great but go a little too fast for me unless I pause...rewind...pause...not what I wanted. I looked all over the internet and finally found two Mandala Tutorials on the website http://colorful-crafts.com
Here is the link for the blue and green one:

Here is my first Mandala Rock using this Tutorial:

I started by picking out some rocks in my yard and washing them.

Then I painted black circles on them for the Mandala backgrounds.

I found this punch set in my craft collection:

They make perfect dots for painting the mandalas. You can use paintbrushes, dowels, special tools for making dots or just use what you can find around the house.

After my first try, I painted several other rocks playing with patterns and color:

For more ideas for painting your rocks Colorful crafts has a nice Gallery:

Youtube is full of tutorials, I liked this short video for beginners:

Have some fun and try painting your own rocks, with Mandalas or any other design of your choosing. I would love to see what you come up with!

Hiding Painted Rocks

Before I tried painting Mandalas on Rocks I joined a group on Facebook where people paint rocks and hide them around town for others to find. A simple way to brighten another's day. I loved this idea and it was one of the reasons I did the painted rocks tutorial. Today I hid my rocks around town.

This one is in a place where healing takes place...

This one I had at a local park...

A tree hides this one close to a place of learning...

In a tree outside government offices...

and the last two were both placed where people gather for different reasons....

I had fun hiding them during my lunch break today...I hope others find them and they bring a smile or two...

If you're local and would like to join in the fun...here is the link to

If you're not local and would still like to join in the fun...search for a local group or start one of your own!
